Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) Dataset

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including—

Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence
Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection
Alcohol and other drug use
Tobacco use
Unhealthy dietary behaviors
Inadequate physical activity
YRBSS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma and other health-related behaviors plus sexual identity and sex of sexual contacts.

YRBSS includes a national school-based survey conducted by CDC and state, territorial, tribal, and local surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments.

Every two years

Interpretation

YRBSS data are weighted to adjust for school and student nonresponse and to make the data representative of the population of students from which the sample was drawn. Generally, these adjustments are made by applying a weight based on student sex, grade, and race/ethnicity. YRBS data that are weighted to be representative of all public school students in grades 9-12 in the respective jurisdiction.

Mortality Dataset

Mortality data for various causes of death, including: Accidental deaths, Intentional deaths (suicide, homicide, and legal interventions), Suicide deaths, Homicide deaths, Carbon Monoxide deaths, deaths associated with Nationally Notifiable Infectious Conditions, Heat-related deaths, Hepatitis C as underlying cause of death, Asthma deaths, and Mortality Amenable to Healthcare; Fetal mortality and Infant Mortality; Drug Overdose deaths, Any Opioid deaths, Cocaine deaths, Heroin deaths, Synthetic opioid deaths, Methadone deaths, Natural and semi-synthetic opioid deaths, non-opioid deaths, other and unspecified narcotic deaths

Rationale

These indicators are used for reporting of Nationally Consistent Data Measures (NCDM). The purpose of these NCDM was to develop standardized data and measures for understanding the impact of our environment on our health and to establish the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network.
