Overview

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a condition that makes it hard to breathe due to damage to the airways or other parts of the lung. It can cause coughing, breathing problems, and chest tightness. In the United States, COPD refers to two main conditions: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. According to the CDC, COPD affects nearly 16 million adults and is a major cause of disability and the sixth leading cause of death in the US.

COPD can often be prevented by not smoking, which is a leading cause of the disease. Air pollution also plays a role in the prevalence of COPD. Although there is no cure, treatments and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking can help manage the symptoms and slow the progress of the disease.
