Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are very common. An STI is a virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite that can be transmitted through sexual contact. There are many different types of STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. STIs are spread through sexual contact. Many STIs may not show symptoms or may only cause mild symptoms, so it's possible to have an infection without knowing it. That's why it's important to get tested for STIs if you are sexually active. If you receive a positive STI diagnosis, it's important to know that all STIs are treatable with medicine, and some are entirely curable.
