<p> The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including—</p> <ul> <li> Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence </li><li> Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection </li><li> Alcohol and other drug use </li><li> Tobacco use </li><li> Unhealthy dietary behaviors </li><li> Inadequate physical activity </li><li> YRBSS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma and other health-related behaviors plus sexual identity and sex of sexual contacts.</ul> <p> YRBSS includes a national school-based survey conducted by CDC and state, territorial, tribal, and local surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the nation’s premier system of health-related telephone surveys that collect state data about U.S. residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. Established in 1984 with 15 states, BRFSS now collects data in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories. BRFSS completes more than 400,000 adult interviews each year, making it the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (also called NAS) is a group of conditions caused when a baby withdraws from certain drugs they are exposed to in the womb before birth. NAS is most often caused when a woman takes opioids during pregnancy.
