Introduction

What is influenza (flu)?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Now that we're learning to live more freely with COVID-19 more Delawareans are interacting outside the home, people are going to more public events, and fewer people are wearing masks. These things make it easier for the flu to spread.

The best way to protect yourself is to get an annual flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is safe, and all individuals 6 months and older are eligible. To find your flu vaccine, visit coronavirus.delaware.gov/fight-the-flu.

What is the goal of this dashboard?

This dashboard is intended to provide an accurate picture of flu activity in Delaware through access to ongoing information on influenza cases, hospitalizations, deaths, and vaccination rates among Delawareans.

How often is this page updated?

This dashboard is updated weekly on Thursdays at the state and county level, and monthly for other geographies.

What are MMWR weeks?

The MMWR week is the week of the year for which the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) disease report is assigned for the purposes of MMWR disease incidence reporting and publishing. MMWR weeks last from Sunday through Saturday and range from 1 to 52. Influenza season spans from the 40th-52nd week of one year and the 1st-20th of the next; you will see reference to MMWR weeks throughout this dashboard.
